Al Jolson , geboren als Аса Йоэлсон in 1886 in Litouwen, was een prominent figuur in de traditionele jazz en de vroege Amerikaanse populaire muziek. Vaak aangeduid als "De grootste entertainer ter wereld", verwierf hij faam door zijn dynamische podiumpresentatie en baanbrekende gebruik van blackface tijdens optredens, een praktijk die nu breed bekritiseerd wordt. Hoogtepunten in zijn carrière zijn onder meer zijn hoofdrol in de eerste lange geluidsfilm, "The Jazz Singer" (1927), die een revolutie teweegbracht in de filmindustrie. Tot zijn bekendste nummers behoren "Swanee" , "My Mammy" en "April Showers" . Al Jolson speelde een belangrijke rol in de vorming van de entertainmentindustrie in het begin van de 20e eeuw.
