I sent my résumé to God

In MLA and 12 point font

My awards are all in order and my references are pretty strong

My bullet points concise and now my grammar’s fixed and typos found

I’m hopin' if she sees it I have made my English teacher proud

And I’ve done my share of charity

But left out the profanities

I know he’s a busy guy and probably won’t remember these

The omnipotent editor knows all the tricks by now I’m sure

But first impressions stick, so I am leading with my best foot first

So now I wait for the response

A call from my potential boss

Did I apply 'cause I am lost?

Is it too late to call it off?

I didn’t know I had an answer for this question 'till I asked

But now that I am set in motion all I want’s a second chance

Take it back

I’m flinching as I check the mail

And flip through bills and grocery sales

I throw out all the clutter, understand that it can’t help me now

But there it is, I’ve finally heard

‘Cause in my hands: the holy word

The envelope is gold and it’s addressed to: «whom it may concern»

And I’m too scared

To look inside

With shaking hands

And fading eyes

But nothing now can change at all the contents of this envelope

It’s best I get this over with, 'cause ignorance won’t save my soul

And I read the words one at a time

But can’t get past the leading line

My eyes refocus, open wide…

«Your application’s been denied»

Didn’t know I had an answer for this question 'till I asked

But now that I may never have it, all I want’s a second chance

Ik heb mijn cv naar God gestuurd

Mijn onderscheidingen zijn allemaal in orde en mijn referenties zijn behoorlijk sterk

Mijn opsommingstekens beknopt en nu mijn grammatica opgelost en typefouten gevonden

Ik hoop dat als ze het ziet, ik mijn leraar Engels trots heb gemaakt

En ik heb mijn deel van het goede doel gedaan

Maar de godslasteringen weggelaten

Ik weet dat hij het druk heeft en zal deze waarschijnlijk niet onthouden

De almachtige redacteur kent inmiddels alle trucjes, dat weet ik zeker

Maar de eerste indruk blijft, dus ik leid met mijn beste been eerst

Dus nu wacht ik op het antwoord

Een telefoontje van mijn potentiële baas

Heb ik me aangemeld omdat ik verdwaald ben?

Is het te laat om het af te zeggen?

Ik wist niet dat ik een antwoord op deze vraag had totdat ik het vroeg

Maar nu ik in beweging ben gezet, wil ik alleen nog een tweede kans

Ik kromp ineen terwijl ik de e-mail check

En blader door rekeningen en boodschappen

Ik gooi alle rommel weg, begrijp dat het me nu niet kan helpen

Maar daar is het, ik heb het eindelijk gehoord

Want in mijn handen: het heilige woord

De envelop is van goud en is geadresseerd aan: «wie het aangaat»

En ik ben te bang

Om binnen te kijken

Met trillende handen

En vervagende ogen

Maar er kan nu niets meer veranderen aan de inhoud van deze envelop

Het is het beste dat ik hiermee klaar ben, want onwetendheid zal mijn ziel niet redden

En ik las de woorden één voor één voor

Maar kan niet voorbij de leidende lijn komen

Mijn ogen richten zich opnieuw, gaan wijd open...
