Continuing the story, humanity stumbles--

gone is the glory, there’s a far distant rumble.

The clouds have gathered and exploded now:

axes shattered, there is no North or South!

Far off, the ice is foundering slowly…

the ice is turning to water.

The wa ter rushes over all,

cities crash in the mighty wave;

the final man is very small,

plunging in for his final bathe.

This is the ending of the beginning…

this is the beginning of the end,

poles are fixed once more,

water’s receding, like death-blood.

Als we het verhaal voortzetten, struikelt de mensheid...

weg is de glorie, er is een verre gerommel.

De wolken hebben zich nu verzameld en ontploft:

assen verbrijzeld, er is geen Noord of Zuid!

In de verte is het ijs langzaam aan het zinken...

het ijs verandert in water.

Het water stroomt over alles,

steden crashen in de machtige golf;

de laatste man is erg klein,

zich onderdompelen voor zijn laatste bad.

Dit is het einde van het begin...

dit is het begin van het einde,

midden van het midden, middelpunt, einde en begin:

de eerste piek stijgt, dwingt de golven uit elkaar.

In de verte wordt het ijs nu opnieuw gevormd:

palen zijn weer vast,

het water trekt zich terug, als doodsbloed.

En als het water weer valt,

alles is dood en niemand leeft.

En toen zei hij:

'Elke stap lijkt het onvermijdelijke gevolg te zijn van de...

voorafgaande, en uiteindelijk lonkt er meer en meer

duidelijk totale vernietiging!'

Dit is het einde van het begin...
