We’ve got a long way to go

Before we finish our patrol

Light burns off in the distance

No one dares make a sound

Scared we might wake the snow

Sleeping giants love to listen

And tethered together by lines of gold

Two of my brothers on patrol

Our breathing keeps us in rhythm

Eye on the wool cape you have wove

I can smell your lavender and lipstick

You would never, ask me when I’m coming home

You know better, than to wait and watch the snow

While the other wives and mothers pray and count their rosaries

Not my lover, her lipstick lavender keeps her close to me

Hold me close as the hour escapes

Sunlight running on the mountain’s ravenous face

The moon came too soon and it’ll stay out too late

And I can feel that goddamn bell before they ring it

Gold heats in your hair promptly at 4 p.m.

Then cool to amber as the sun sets again

The light through the blinds paints patterns on skin

Your head dovetails so nicely on my chest where you laid it

When I’m out in the shop, faced to the forge

I think of you, my love, as I tend to the coals

Smiths with flames high in their eyes are all for show

Dreaming, lying to themselves that they’ve battled Hades

A fire’s that’s good take patience, control

Even bellow breathing this work is painfully slow

We hebben nog een lange weg te gaan

Voordat we onze patrouille beëindigen

Licht brandt in de verte

Niemand durft een geluid te maken

Bang dat we de sneeuw zouden wekken

Slapende reuzen luisteren graag

En aan elkaar vastgemaakt door lijnen van goud

Twee van mijn broers op patrouille

Onze ademhaling houdt ons in het ritme

Nou schat, ik weet dat het koud wordt

Kijk naar de wollen cape die je hebt geweven

Ik ruik je lavendel en lippenstift

Je zou me nooit vragen wanneer ik thuiskom

Je weet wel beter dan te wachten en naar de sneeuw te kijken

Terwijl de andere vrouwen en moeders bidden en hun rozenkransen tellen

Niet mijn geliefde, haar lavendelkleurige lippenstift houdt haar dicht bij me

Houd me dicht tegen het uur aan

Zonlicht dat op het hongerige gezicht van de berg valt

De maan kwam te vroeg en hij blijft te laat buiten

En ik kan die verdomde bel voelen voordat ze hem luiden

Goud warmt snel op in je haar om 16.00 uur.

Koel vervolgens af tot barnsteen als de zon weer ondergaat

Het licht door de jaloezieën schildert patronen op de huid

Je hoofd sluit zo mooi aan op mijn borst waar je het hebt gelegd

Als ik in de winkel ben, geconfronteerd met de smidse

Ik denk aan jou, mijn liefste, zoals ik de neiging heb om de kolen

Smiths met vlammen hoog in hun ogen zijn allemaal voor de show

Dromen, liegen tegen zichzelf dat ze tegen Hades hebben gevochten

Een vuur is goed, heb geduld, controle

Zelfs blaasademhaling is dit werk pijnlijk traag

Maar je moet volhouden, want je zult de beloning proeven

Wanneer dat witte strijkijzer uittrekt, net alsof het geverfd is

Ik weet dat je dit weet, maar ik zeg het je deze keer

Omdat ik het hardop moet zeggen om me goed te voelen
