So in the same way, we find that the watching self, or the observing self,

behind all our thoughts and feelings, is itself a thought

That is to say, when the police enter a house in which there are thieves

The thieves go up from the ground floor, the first floor

When the police arrive on the first floor, the thieves have gone up to the

second

And so to the third, and finally, out to the roof

And so when the go is about to be unmasked, it immediatly identifies with the

higher self

It goes up a level

Because the religious game is simply a refined and highbrow version of the

ordinary game

How can I outwit me?

How can I one-up me?

So, if I find, for example, that in the quest for pleasure

The ordinary pleasures of the world, food, sex, power, food, sex, power

All this becomes a drag, and I think, «No, it isn’t there.»

So I go in for the arts, and literature, poetry, music, and I absorb myself in

those pleasures

And after a while

They aren’t the answer

So I go to psychoanalysis

And then I found out that’s not the answer

I go to religion

I’m still seeking what I was seeking when I wanted candy bars

I wanna get that goody

Only, I see now that, of course, not gonna be a material goody

All material goodies fall apart, but maybe there’s a spiritual goody that’s not

gonna fall apart

But in that quest

The quest is not different from the quest for the candy bar

Same old story, only you’ve refined the candy bar, made it abstract and holy

and blessed, and so on

So it is with the higher self, the higher self’s your old ego

And you sure hope it is eternal

Dus op dezelfde manier vinden we dat het kijkende zelf, of het observerende zelf,

achter al onze gedachten en gevoelens, is zelf een gedachte

En dus wanneer de go op het punt staat te worden ontmaskerd, identificeert het zich onmiddellijk met de

hoger zelf

Het gaat een niveau omhoog

Omdat het religieuze spel gewoon een verfijnde en elitaire versie is van de

gewoon spel

Hoe kan ik te slim af zijn?

Hoe kan ik me een handje helpen?

Dus als ik dat bijvoorbeeld vind in de zoektocht naar plezier

De gewone geneugten van de wereld, eten, seks, macht, eten, seks, macht

Dit alles wordt een belemmering, en ik denk: "Nee, het is er niet."

Dus ik ga voor kunst, literatuur, poëzie, muziek en ik ga helemaal op in

die geneugten

En toen kwam ik erachter dat dat niet het antwoord is

Ik ga naar religie

Ik ben nog steeds op zoek naar wat ik zocht toen ik candybars wilde

Ik wil dat lekkers halen

Alleen, ik zie nu in dat dit natuurlijk geen materiële goody zal zijn

Alle materiële goodies vallen uit elkaar, maar misschien is er een spirituele goody die dat niet is

gaat uit elkaar vallen

Maar in die zoektocht

De zoektocht is niet anders dan de zoektocht naar de reep

Hetzelfde oude verhaal, alleen heb jij de reep verfijnd, abstract en heilig gemaakt

en gezegend, enzovoort

Zo is het met het hogere zelf, het hogere zelf is je oude ego

En je hoopt echt dat het voor eeuwig is
