Good evening

I would like to welcome family, friends and faculty

To the 1984 commencement ceremony for Sheepshead Bay High School

To the seniors I want to say: «congratulations»

I know today feels like the end of of a long journey

But it’s actually only the beginning

Today is the first day of the rest of your lives

My moms said: «you looked great in your cap and gown»

Life’s daring me to fight but I ain’t backing down

I got travel plans in minivans and caravans and 747's but I’ll still be coming

back around

And while I’m out there, can’t act a clown

I won’t be on the block, so I don’t have to frown

Man, the world so beautiful and colorful

It a be a shame if I only saw black and brown

So I look at my horizons and broaden them

It’s so surprising or according to them

I should be dead or incarcerated

Or strung out, but I’ve come out and of course I made it

Yeah, despite all the naysayers

I just leave it up to God when i say prayers

From this day forward I will vow

To always cut through the bullshit like cake layers

And rise above it all, way above it all

Life can be a mix bad, I gotta love it all

That’s what they told me at the podium

Don’t let them ever hold you like imodium

Ik wil graag familie, vrienden en docenten verwelkomen

Naar de startceremonie van 1984 voor Sheepshead Bay High School

Tegen de senioren wil ik zeggen: «gefeliciteerd»

Ik weet dat vandaag voelt als het einde van een lange reis

Maar het is eigenlijk nog maar het begin

Vandaag is de eerste dag van de rest van je leven

Mijn moeders zeiden: «je zag er geweldig uit in je pet en je jurk»

Het leven daagt me uit om te vechten, maar ik deins niet terug

Ik heb reisplannen in minivans en caravans en 747's, maar ik kom nog steeds

terug rond

En terwijl ik daar ben, kan ik geen clown spelen

Ik zal niet in de buurt zijn, dus ik hoef niet te fronsen

Man, de wereld zo mooi en kleurrijk

Het zou jammer zijn als ik alleen zwart en bruin zag

Dus ik kijk naar mijn horizon en verbreed ze

Het is zo verrassend of volgens hen

Ik zou dood of opgesloten moeten zijn

Of uitgeslapen, maar ik ben eruit gekomen en natuurlijk heb ik het gehaald

Ja, ondanks alle nee-zeggers

Ik laat het aan God over als ik bid

Vanaf deze dag zal ik zweren

Om altijd door de bullshit heen te komen, zoals taartlagen

En boven alles uitstijgen, ver boven alles uit

Het leven kan een slechte mix zijn, ik moet er allemaal van houden

Dat vertelden ze me op het podium

Laat ze je nooit vasthouden als imodium

Blijf los, wees klaar wanneer je tijd komt

Blijf alert, wees klaar wanneer het bord komt

Want je wilt je roeping niet missen

Blijf op de hoogte terwijl de ballonnen in de mist van vallen zijn

Degenen die je niet steunen als je jong bent, als je volwassen bent, proberen ze misschien te controleren

Mijn mentaliteit is verdomme dat

Zonder hen was ik nog steeds weg, stap uit alsof ik de rechter ken

En ik ben niet degene die de drugs heeft verkocht

Ik en dat leven is geen correlatie
