Some dos and don’ts

Mostly don’ts:

Please don’t cough

It tends to throw the actors off

Have some respect for Aristophanes

And please, don’t cough

Please don’t squeak

We haven’t oiled the seats all week

You wouldn’t want to miss a single work of Greek

It’s hard enough for us to hear each other speak

So please, don’t squeak

If you see flaws, please

No loud guffaws, please

Only because, please

There are politer ways

As for applause, please

When there’s a pause, please

Although we welcome praise

The echo sometimes lasts for days…

Don’t take notes

To show us all you know the famous quotes

And when you disapprove don’t clear your throats

Or throw your crumpled programs, coins and coats

Or tell your neighbor scintillating anecdotes

And if, by a sudden miracle

A tune should appear that’s lyrical

The jokes are obscure but numerous…

Don’t squirm or laugh

It starts when we act mysterious

And if you’re in doubt, don’t query us

I’ll signal you when we’re serious

Enkele do's en don'ts

Meestal niet:

Hoest alsjeblieft niet

Het heeft de neiging om de acteurs af te stoten

Heb enig respect voor Aristophanes

En alsjeblieft, niet hoesten

Alsjeblieft niet piepen

We hebben de stoelen de hele week niet geolied

Je zou geen enkel Grieks werk willen missen

Het is al moeilijk genoeg voor ons om elkaar te horen praten

Dus alsjeblieft, niet piepen

Als u fouten ziet, alstublieft

Geen luid gelach, alsjeblieft

Alleen omdat, alsjeblieft

Er zijn beleefdere manieren

Wat betreft applaus, alstublieft

Als er een pauze is, alstublieft

Hoewel we lof verwelkomen

Van snoep verpakt in cellofaan

Als we retorisch moeten worden

Wacht tot het allegorisch is

En in vers!

Als we satirisch zouden moeten worden

Vat het niet verkeerd op

En als, door een plotseling wonder,

Er zou een deuntje moeten verschijnen dat lyrisch is

Niet mee neuriën

Wanneer we humoristisch aan het worden zijn

Alsjeblieft niet afnemen

De grappen zijn obscuur maar talrijk...

We zullen het uitleggen

Als we serieus worden

Niet kronkelen of lachen

Het begint wanneer we ons mysterieus gedragen

En als u twijfelt, stel ons dan geen vragen

Ik geef je een seintje als we serieus zijn

Het maakt de acteurs alleen maar verdrietig

We hebben misschien iets beters in petto

Op elke regel die je denkt niet te hebben

En als je in de war bent omdat je de plot hebt gemist

(Waarvan ik moet toegeven dat er niet veel is)

Nog steeds niet

Als iemand naakt is, alsjeblieft

Ze is er voor de stemming, alsjeblieft

En mag niet worden omarmd

Als we grof zijn, alsjeblieft

Laten we niet te streng zijn -

De reputatie van de auteur is niet gebaseerd

Naar smaak

Dus alsjeblieft, laat geen scheet...

Er is heel weinig lucht en dit is kunst

En als we aanstootgevend worden, verlies dan niet de moed

Doe alsof het gewoon de toneelschrijver is die slim is

Uiteindelijk komen we bij de catharsis en vertrekken dan
