1Lo, the central thought of God

Is that He be one with man;

He to man is everything

That He might fulfill His plan.

2Earthen vessel man was made-

Body, soul, and spirit too,

God as life that he may take

And with Him have oneness true.

3By the flow of life divine,

Man becomes a precious stone

Fit for building God’s abode,

That His glory might be known.

4'Tis the city God hath built,

'Tis the dwelling God requires,

'Tis the new Jerusalem

Which fulfills His heart’s desires.

5'Tis the building of the saints,

'Tis the blend of God and man,

Purposed by the Father’s will

Long before the world began.

6In its center, as its pow’r,

Is the throne of Christ and God,

Whence doth flow the stream of life

As the Spirit’s living flood.

7Christ, the tree of life, is there

In the flowing of the stream,

Yielding fruit of life divine

As the food of life supreme.

8God in Christ, the glorious light,

Thru the city brightly shines,

Scattering all the deathly night

With its light of life divine.

9God in man and man in God

Mutual dwelling thus possess;

God the content is to man,

And the man doth God express.

1Zie, de centrale gedachte van God

Is dat Hij één is met de mens;

Hij voor de mens is alles

Dat Hij Zijn plan zou kunnen vervullen.

2Aarden vat de mens is gemaakt-

Lichaam, ziel en geest ook,

God als leven dat hij kan nemen

En heb met Hem ware eenheid.

3Door de stroom van het goddelijke leven,

De mens wordt een edelsteen

Geschikt voor het bouwen van Gods verblijfplaats,

Opdat Zijn heerlijkheid bekend mag worden.

4Het is de stad die God heeft gebouwd,

'Dit is de woning die God vereist,

'Het is het nieuwe Jeruzalem

Die de verlangens van Zijn hart vervult.

5'Tis het gebouw van de heiligen,

'Tis de mix van God en de mens,

Bedoeld door de wil van de Vader

Lang voordat de wereld begon.

6In het midden, als zijn kracht,

Is de troon van Christus en God,

Waar komt de stroom van het leven vandaan

Als de levende vloed van de Geest.

7Christus, de boom des levens, is daar

In het stromen van de stroom,

Vrucht voortbrengend van goddelijk leven

Als het voedsel van het leven oppermachtig.

8God in Christus, het glorieuze licht,

Door de stad schijnt helder,

Verstrooiing de hele dodelijke nacht

Met zijn goddelijk levenslicht.

9God in de mens en de mens in God

Gemeenschappelijke woning bezit dus;

God, de inhoud is voor de mens,

En de man spreekt God uit.
