Billy was a friend of mine, we drove the midnight run

And on the planes outside of hay we’d race our rigs for fun

Just before the borderline, a girl’s voice filled the air

Calling on the CV, Billy knew girls everywhere

Now this one he called Sally, she ran a pub somewhere

She knew the codes and all the roads that led away from there

When the scalies stopped to drink she’d find out where they’d been

And radioed their whereabouts to Billy and our team

Billy lost some points for driving hours in excess

The RTA was after him, he was hounded more or less

Still, he kept on driving late, I guess that’s all he know

I saw him roar up, laugh, and say, «And Sal will guide me through»

That night he struck a thunderstorm, his radio went out

He took the long way round in case the scalies were about

The night was dark and raining, it was such a rotten bend

Where Billy missed the turn-off and jack-dived to his end

I gave a bloke a ride that night, I couldn’t see his face

He asked me if I knew the pub in the town just further on

But when I turned to answer him, my passenger was gone

I stopped the truck, I searched the roads, hoped he didn’t fall

But everything was still like there’d been no one there at all

I headed for the town he said and found that one hotel

Die nacht trof hij een onweersbui, zijn radio ging uit

Hij nam de lange omweg voor het geval de schilfers ongeveer waren

De nacht was donker en het regende, het was zo'n rotte bocht

Waar Billy de afslag miste en naar zijn einde dook
