The Mysterious "J" - Laurie Anderson

But I think I can picture this 'J' scribbling away and laughing…

Although the first time I saw the Bible re-enacted was sometime in the 70s,

and there was a cable TV show in the Midwest and Bible study groups would act

out parts of the Bible, but these were pretty low budget productions,

and shot in a church basement or somebody’s rec room, and all the prophets had

towels wrapped around their heads for turbans, but you could see the tags,

the ones with the washing instructions, sort of sticking out in back

There were very few women on these tapes.

They tended to be the odd shepherdess

or dancing girl bit part

Then last year I was invited to perform in Israel, and I was very excited

because I wanted to see Jerusalem, where this mysterious 'J' had spent her life

writing and working, and the Gulf War had made me even more curious.

So I did some asking around, some informal research, and I talked to an

Israeli woman who was living in New York, and she was really having a hard time

living there

And she was always complaining about American men, and she’d say: «You know,

American men are such wimps, I mean, they’re always talking about their

feelings»

And I said:"They are?"

And she said she really liked Israeli men because they were so tough and

because they all had guns

And I said: «Guns?

you like guys with guns?»

And she said she did and went on about how terrible it was that Clinton wanted

to reduce the army, and she was so adamant about this that I started to get

kind of worried.

Yeah, I thought, yeah that’s true, what are all these military

people going to do when they lose their jobs?

And then I thought: Well, hang on, we’ve got all these service industries now,

things like psychotherapy, and the military approach to psychotherapy would

really be kind of perfect, really efficient and fast, you know:

«Listen, you are nothing, you are a worm!

And if you don’t get that mother

complex solved by 0400 hours you are dead meat!»

Maar ik denk dat ik me kan voorstellen dat deze 'J' wegkrabbelt en lacht...

Hoewel de eerste keer dat ik de Bijbel nagespeeld zag, ergens in de jaren 70 was,

en er was een kabel-tv-show in het Midwesten en bijbelstudiegroepen zouden optreden

uit delen van de Bijbel, maar dit waren vrij goedkope producties,

en neergeschoten in een kerkkelder of iemands recreatieruimte, en alle profeten hadden...

handdoeken om hun hoofd gewikkeld voor tulbanden, maar je kon de labels zien,

die met de wasinstructies, steken een beetje uit achterin

Er waren maar heel weinig vrouwen op deze banden.

Ze waren meestal de vreemde herderin

of een dansend meisje-deeltje

Vorig jaar werd ik uitgenodigd om op te treden in Israël, en ik was erg opgewonden

omdat ik Jeruzalem wilde zien, waar deze mysterieuze 'J' haar leven had doorgebracht

schrijven en werken, en de Golfoorlog had me nog nieuwsgieriger gemaakt.

Dus ik heb wat rondgevraagd, wat informeel onderzoek gedaan en ik sprak met een

Israëlische vrouw die in New York woonde, en ze had het echt moeilijk

daar wonen

En ze klaagde altijd over Amerikaanse mannen en zei dan: «Weet je,

Amerikaanse mannen zijn zulke watjes, ik bedoel, ze hebben het altijd over hun...

gevoelens"

En ik zei: "Zijn ze?"

En ze zei dat ze echt van Israëlische mannen hield omdat ze zo stoer waren en...

omdat ze allemaal wapens hadden

En ik zei: «Geweren?

hou je van mannen met geweren?»

En ze zei dat ze dat deed en ging verder over hoe vreselijk het was dat Clinton wilde...

om het leger te verminderen, en ze was hier zo onvermurwbaar over dat ik begon te krijgen

een beetje bezorgd.

Ja, ik dacht, ja dat is waar, wat zijn al die militairen?

mensen gaan doen als ze hun baan verliezen?

En toen dacht ik: wacht even, we hebben nu al deze dienstverlenende industrieën,

zaken als psychotherapie en de militaire benadering van psychotherapie zouden

echt een beetje perfect, echt efficiënt en snel zijn, weet je:

«Luister, je bent niets, je bent een worm!

En als je die moeder niet krijgt

complex opgelost om 0400 uur ben je dood vlees!»
