Candles of a Roman ilk

Unloaded from a Chevy truck

Into the home her folks had built

Patio was charcoals and extended fam in folding chairs

Safely arced around the yard to focus on the smoking flares

Couple cousins, uncles, aunts

Mostly grown-ups, couple brats

Baby Ruby’s only two, she’s too close to the jumping jacks

Mommy scoops her to the house, buckles up the booster seat

Rolls her to the storm door, let her long for all the lunacy

Telephone distracting Mom, Ruby wriggles out her strap

Fingers push the plexiglass, she’s off into the sour patch

Past the pyrotechnics, undetected and invisible

Woke the sleeping beagle skipping toward the kidney swimming pool

Off into the yawning blue, the splash would mum the rocket-ships

Ruby’s lungs were filling by the time her kin were cognizant

Many sprung and sprinted down, all arrive belated but

The beast she had earlier stirred had been alert since waking up

Canine let his gainer fly, water-top commotion grow

Howling guests assume the cloven hooves had come to do-si-do

Frenzied and congested deck, part to let the others see

Soggy beagle gently dragging Ruby in his yellow teeth

Laid the tiny body in the sun before her father‘s feet

When she choked the liquid through her bluish lips he dropped his knee

Help the air to reconvene, towel his shaking Ruby off

EMT confirm the save, everybody say «good dog!»

Kaarsen van een Romeins soort

Gelost uit een Chevy-vrachtwagen

In het huis dat haar ouders hadden gebouwd

Patio was houtskool en uitgebreide fam in klapstoelen

Veilig gebogen rond de tuin om je te concentreren op de rokende fakkels

Paar neven, ooms, tantes

Meestal volwassenen, koppels

Baby Ruby is pas twee, ze staat te dicht bij de jumping jacks

Mama neemt haar mee naar huis, maakt de stoelverhoger vast

Rolt haar naar de stormdeur, laat haar verlangen naar alle waanzin

Telefoon leidt moeder af, Ruby wringt haar riem uit

Vingers duwen het plexiglas, ze is weg in de zure patch

Voorbij de pyrotechniek, onopgemerkt en onzichtbaar

Wekte de slapende beagle die naar het nierzwembad huppelde

Weg in het gapende blauw, de plons zou de raketschepen mompelen

Ruby's longen vulden zich tegen de tijd dat haar familie het wist

Velen sprongen op en sprintten naar beneden, ze kwamen allemaal te laat aan, maar

Het beest dat ze eerder had beroerd was alert sinds ze wakker was geworden

Canine laat zijn gainer vliegen, water-top commotie groeien

Huilende gasten nemen aan dat de gespleten hoeven waren gekomen om te doen

Waanzinnig en overvol dek, deel om de anderen te laten zien

Doorweekte beagle die Ruby zachtjes tussen zijn gele tanden sleept

Legde het kleine lichaam in de zon voor de voeten van haar vader

Toen ze de vloeistof door haar blauwachtige lippen slikte, liet hij zijn knie zakken

Help de lucht weer samen te komen, droog zijn trillende Ruby af

EMT bevestigt het opslaan, iedereen zegt "goede hond!"
