She wanted to move.

She wanted to try something new.

She wanted to live in San Francisco

in a place with a view.

She wanted the sound.

She wanted the life all around.

She wanted the fun and the action of a livelier town,

but he…

He would still disagree,

'cause he loved the stillness of morning

and the wind in the trees.

He needed the stars.

He needed to say: «This is ours.»

And look at a field and a pasture

and a road with no cars.

He wanted a farm.

He wanted a horse in a barn.

He wanted a life in the country, far from the town,

so they…

They chose to stay;

they found a place where they hoped

they might both have their way.

Surprise!

But that compromise

was a life in the suburbs

that they both could despise

with nothing of either, yes and too much of each.

The things that they wanted were both out of reach:

No land for the garden, but too far from the stores.

No new folk to talk to, but loud neighbors next door.

Though traffic was endless, no one stepped outside.

An outpost of loners who’ve come there to hide.

Now why they stayed, all those years,

the answer can’t be found,

but there they were, there they fought,

and there they stood their ground

in my hometown

Ze wilde verhuizen.

Ze wilde iets nieuws proberen.

Ze wilde in San Francisco wonen

op een plek met uitzicht.

Ze wilde het geluid.

Ze wilde het leven rondom.

Ze wilde het plezier en de actie van een levendigere stad,

maar hij…

Hij zou het er nog steeds niet mee eens zijn,

omdat hij hield van de stilte van de ochtend

en de wind in de bomen.

Hij had de sterren nodig.

Hij moest zeggen: "Dit is van ons."

En kijk naar een veld en een weiland

en een weg zonder auto's.

Hij wilde een boerderij.

Hij wilde een paard in een schuur.

Hij wilde een leven op het platteland, ver van de stad,

dus zij...

Ze kozen ervoor om te blijven;

ze vonden een plek waar ze hoopten

ze kunnen allebei hun zin krijgen.

Verrassing!

Maar dat compromis

was een leven in de buitenwijken

dat ze allebei konden verachten

met niets van een van beide, ja en te veel van elk.

De dingen die ze wilden waren allebei buiten bereik:

Geen land voor de tuin, maar te ver van de winkels.

Geen nieuwe mensen om mee te praten, maar luide buren naast de deur.

Hoewel het verkeer eindeloos was, stapte niemand naar buiten.

Een buitenpost van eenlingen die daar zijn gekomen om zich te verstoppen.

Nu waarom ze bleven, al die jaren,

het antwoord kan niet worden gevonden,

maar daar waren ze, daar vochten ze,

en daar stonden ze hun mannetje

in mijn thuisstad
