Ethusel - Sandy Denny

I saw a dark star against the black sky

Of a night thirteen hundred years long

It cast shrouding shadows upon the desert

Of the dark moons that formed in her eyes.

«On the … of her back the sun never smiled

And the noon of the day was in shadow

And the sky left its beard on the black barren earth

And the … was found in her eyes.

On a shrine of black flowers Ethusel lay dead

As he had for thirteen centuries

At his feet five crows stood and watched to his keep

And the whisper of time sighed around the hills.

Panasowna has tried fair wind for a steed

Though the sky’s in search of the star

And the serpent entwined about the stag’s head

Tried to reach out and poison her hair.

«O no, Panasowna, you will not go far

Ethusel has only one hour

And if you do not reach him before it is over

Then the other falls into the ocean.

«Panasowna took her pen and she stabbed the serpent’s eye

And he fell through the clouds to the land.

As she rode on and on full of laden stones

With horizons of life in her unsung.

«It was then that the daylight became the dark night

She recalled what the farmer had said:

When the night becomes black and no sound can be heard,

You have come to the land of the night.

«And she found the dark star hanging low in the sky

And she gathered it up in her arms

And she rode to the shrine where Ethusel lay dead

And she placed the dark star in her hair.

And the star became bright and it shone on the land

And the shrouds of darkness were gone

And Ethusel was standing before Panasowna

And the light came to bear in her hair.

Ik zag een donkere ster tegen de zwarte lucht

Van een nacht van dertienhonderd jaar lang

Het wierp verhullende schaduwen op de woestijn

Van de donkere manen die zich in haar ogen vormden.

«Op de … van haar rug lachte de zon nooit

En de middag van de dag was in de schaduw

En de lucht liet zijn baard achter op de zwarte kale aarde

En de … werd gevonden in haar ogen.

Op een heiligdom van zwarte bloemen lag Ethusel dood

Zoals hij dat dertien eeuwen had gedaan

Aan zijn voeten stonden vijf kraaien en keken naar zijn donjon

En het gefluister van de tijd zuchtte rond de heuvels.

Panasowna heeft goede wind geprobeerd voor een ros

Hoewel de lucht op zoek is naar de ster

En de slang verstrengeld om de kop van het hert

Probeerde uit te reiken en haar haar te vergiftigen.

"O nee, Panasowna, je komt niet ver"

Ehusel heeft maar één uur

En als je hem niet bereikt voordat het voorbij is

Dan valt de andere in de oceaan.

"Panasowna pakte haar pen en stak in het oog van de slang"

En hij viel door de wolken naar het land.

Terwijl ze verder en verder reed, vol geladen stenen

Met horizonten van het leven in haar onbezongen.

"Het was toen dat het daglicht de donkere nacht werd"

Ze herinnerde zich wat de boer had gezegd:

Wanneer de nacht zwart wordt en er geen geluid te horen is,

Je bent naar het land van de nacht gekomen.

"En ze vond de donkere ster laag aan de hemel hangen"

En ze verzamelde het in haar armen

En ze reed naar het heiligdom waar Ehusel dood lag...

En ze plaatste de donkere ster in haar haar.

En de ster werd helder en hij scheen op het land

En de sluiers van duisternis waren verdwenen

En Ehusel stond voor Panasowna

En het licht viel in haar haar.
