I cover the waterfront, watchin' the ship go by

I could see, everybody’s baby, but I couldn’t see mine

And after a while, all the people

Left the harbor, and headed for their destination

All the ships, left the harbor

And headed for their next destination

I sat there, coverin' the waterfront

And after a while, I looked down the ocean

As far as I could see, in the fog, I saw a ship

It headed, this way, comin' out the foam

It must be my baby, comin' down

And after a while, the ship pulled into the harbor

Rollin' slow, so cripple

And my baby, stepped off board

I was still, coverin' the waterfront

Said «Johnny, our ship had trouble, with the fog

And that’s why we’re so late, so late

Comin' home, comin' down'

Ik bedek de waterkant, kijk hoe het schip voorbijgaat

Ik kon zien, ieders baby, maar ik kon de mijne niet zien

Ik kon zien, de schepen die binnenkwamen, naar de haven

Ik kon de mensen zien, hun geliefde ontmoeten

Hand schudden, ik zat daar

Dus helemaal alleen, bedek de waterkant

En na een tijdje, alle mensen

De haven verlaten en op weg naar hun bestemming

Alle schepen, verlieten de haven

En op weg naar hun volgende bestemming

Ik zat daar, bedekt de waterkant

En na een tijdje keek ik naar de oceaan

Voor zover ik kon zien, in de mist, zag ik een schip

Het ging deze kant op, het kwam uit het schuim

Het moet mijn baby zijn, ik kom eraan

En na een tijdje trok het schip de haven binnen

Rollin' traag, zo kreupel

En mijn baby, stapte van boord

Ik was stil, bedekt de waterkant

Zei: "Johnny, ons schip had problemen met de mist"

En daarom zijn we zo laat, zo laat

Kom naar huis, kom naar beneden
