For the islander

The coastline stretches in a thin smile

And the water is cold

So green against the granite

But you’re floating out

Your feathers white upon the water

Swim back to me now

Come back to the places that you know

And warm yourself awhile

Sunlight pools upon the channel

And the furrows are bare

So black against the clouds

But you’re diving down

Between the lines and sinkers

Swim back to me now

Climb the winding path up to the road

That leads you into town, and into the square

To gaze upon the stones that they laid there

And feel the iron heel pressed into your back —

Back to haunt the places that you know

And feel the sun awhile

Then back to the cold

Dive in off the rocks below the road

De kustlijn strekt zich uit in een dunne glimlach

En het water is koud

Zo groen tegen het graniet

Maar je zweeft eruit

Je veren wit op het water

Zwem nu terug naar mij

Kom terug naar de plaatsen die je kent

En warm jezelf even op

Voor de eilandbewoner

Zonlicht valt op het kanaal

En de voren zijn kaal

Zo zwart tegen de wolken

Maar je duikt naar beneden

Tussen de linies en zinkers

Zwem nu terug naar mij

Beklim het kronkelende pad tot aan de weg

Dat leidt je naar de stad, en naar het plein

Om te staren naar de stenen die ze daar legden

En voel de ijzeren hiel tegen je rug gedrukt...

Terug naar de plaatsen die je kent

En voel de zon even

Dan terug naar de kou

Duik in de rotsen onder de weg
