Curlews call

Along the estuary

Late light falls

Under a mile to the sea

And the flickering harbour lights

Trail in the estuary waters tonight

Under meteors

Over the bridge

The old town still clinging on

At the end of the ridge

All but lost to me now

Nightfall

The water’s ebbing away now

Flat sand

Grows with the speed of the tide

Cold now

I watch the curlews and lapwings

Dig down

To see just what they can find

In the glittering

Estuary mud

Trailing their footprints

Before the flood

Comes around again

And washes away

All but every fragment

What light remains

All but lost to me now

Wulpen roepen

Langs het estuarium

Laat licht valt

Minder dan een mijl naar de zee

En de flikkerende havenlichten

Trail in het estuarium van vanavond

onder meteoren

Over de brug

De oude stad klampt zich nog steeds vast

Aan het einde van de bergkam

Alles behalve verloren voor mij nu

vallen van de avond

Het water ebt nu weg

Vlak zand

Groeit met de snelheid van het getij

Nu koud

Ik kijk naar de wulpen en kieviten

Graven

Om te zien wat ze precies kunnen vinden

In het glinsterende

estuarium modder

Hun voetafdrukken volgen

voor de zondvloed

Komt weer rond

En wast weg

Alles behalve elk fragment

Welk licht blijft er over?
