Left the workplace in a hurry

You’d received a call shortly before lunch and you seemed nervous after

You left food in the break room refrigerator is very out of character

You proceeded to speed down 787 which is not at all out of character

But when you arrive home you decided to keep the car rolling

You parked in the supermarket parking lot a few blocks away and listened to

public radio

The station was doing a fun-drive and it was annoying

There was snow on the ground, but it was about a week old

And in upstate New York, that makes the snow the same colour as the shitty,

winter sky

Things were really bleak

The heat in your car makes your lips dry, so you go into a supermarket

It’s a low end grocery store and the shelves are poorly stocked

All the packaged food was unhealthy and all the fruit looks bad

You walk around for almost 10 minutes looking for an avocado before you realise

this market doesn’t carry avocados

You settle for a packet of corn chips and a can of chilli

Then you realise you needed a can opener, it’s ok, you needed one for the house

In the checkout line you listen to a couple talk about their child like he’s a

termite infestation, they seem to wanna go home even less than you do

You left your car in the lot and walk to the park

It’s mostly homeless people but one mother is trying to get her child to enjoy

the terrible snow

You feel embarrassed opening the can of chilli but then realise the company

you’re in and decide it doesn’t matter

After you dump your chilli into the bag of corn chips you realise you don’t

have a fork

For a desperate moment, you consider using a stick but, ultimately,

decide to go without utensils

By the time you’re done you should be embarrassed

Your face and your coat are stained with chilli

The phone starts to ring but your fingers are so messy you hesitate to pick it

up

When you see who called, you’re glad you missed it

The mother and her miserable, cold child seem to be judging you

You spend the rest of the night walking around

You realise your phone’s dead when you attempt to call a friend for a place to

stay, so you return to your car

The supermarket’s still open but it’s just you and the employees now

You buy some wet wipes

For a time you debate sleeping in your car

It’s now too late to call anyone

So you go home

It takes a long time for you to open the door

And when you do…

Haastig van de werkplek vertrokken

Je was kort voor de lunch gebeld en leek daarna nerveus

Je hebt eten achtergelaten in de koelkast in de kantine is erg vreemd

Je ging door met het versnellen van 787, wat helemaal niet vreemd is

Maar toen je thuiskwam, besloot je de auto te laten rijden

Je parkeerde op de parkeerplaats van de supermarkt een paar straten verderop en luisterde naar:

openbare radio

Het station deed een leuke rit en het was vervelend

Er lag sneeuw op de grond, maar het was ongeveer een week oud

En in de staat New York heeft dat de sneeuw dezelfde kleur als de shitty,

winterse lucht

Dingen waren echt somber

Door de hitte in je auto worden je lippen droog, dus ga je naar een supermarkt

Het is een goedkope supermarkt en de schappen zijn slecht gevuld

Al het verpakte voedsel was ongezond en al het fruit ziet er slecht uit

Je loopt bijna 10 minuten rond op zoek naar een avocado voordat je het doorhebt

deze markt heeft geen avocado's

Je neemt genoegen met een pakje maïschips en een blikje chili

Dan realiseer je je dat je een blikopener nodig had, oké, je had er een nodig voor in huis

hoe dan ook

In de kassaregel luister je naar een stel dat over hun kind praat alsof hij een

termietenplaag, lijken ze nog minder naar huis te willen dan jij

Je hebt je auto op de parkeerplaats achtergelaten en loopt naar het park

Het zijn meestal daklozen, maar een moeder probeert haar kind ervan te laten genieten

de verschrikkelijke sneeuw

Je schaamt je om het blikje chili te openen, maar realiseert je dan het bedrijf

je doet mee en besluit dat het niet uitmaakt

Nadat je je chili in de zak met maïschips hebt gedumpt, realiseer je je dat je dat niet doet

een vork hebben

Voor een wanhopig moment overweeg je een stok te gebruiken, maar uiteindelijk

besluit om zonder keukengerei te gaan

Tegen de tijd dat je klaar bent, zou je je moeten schamen

Je gezicht en je jas zijn bevlekt met chili

De telefoon begint te rinkelen, maar je vingers zijn zo rommelig dat je aarzelt om hem te pakken

Als je ziet wie er heeft gebeld, ben je blij dat je het gemist hebt

De moeder en haar ellendige, koude kind lijken je te veroordelen

De rest van de nacht loop je rond

Je realiseert je dat je telefoon leeg is wanneer je probeert een vriend te bellen voor een plaats om te

blijf, dus je keert terug naar je auto

De supermarkt is nog steeds open, maar nu alleen jij en de medewerkers

Je koopt wat vochtige doekjes

Een tijdlang discussieer je over slapen in je auto

Het is nu te laat om iemand te bellen

Dus je gaat naar huis

Het duurt lang voordat je de deur opent

En wanneer je dat doet...
