The bright lights and the sun’s glare

Feel like he hadn’t seen it in a whole year

Looked to his right and saw a wheelchair

But he had no idea what it was doing there

Sluggish and drugged from god knows what

With machines and colostomy bags up to his gut

Body so stiff he want to stand

But he realized that he couldn’t feel his legs

Looked to his right and saw his mom’s there

She smiled back, shed a tear

Reached out, then held his hand

He saw her do it but he couldn’t feel a thing

Physically numb, but he felt fear

Funny how this one time tough guy was now scared

The doctor calmly made him aware

That he’d been in a coma for a whole year

Car accident on New Year’s

He was designated driver for a few friends

Who needed a ride after a few beers

But he hadn’t had a drink in a few years

They was almost home when he got clipped

Spun out of control then the car flipped

Now all he could do was sob with his mom

Said the other kid with him came home fine

Been about three years since that event

Been picking up the pieces ever since

Nobody expects him to walk again

Ride a bike, stand, or play ball again

But he about to show them what’s up

Went from a wheelchair to a walker in nine months

To a walker to learning how to stand up

And today he takes his first steps

Kijk naar je nu, in de lucht, van de grond

Kijk niet naar beneden, ogen vooruit, omhoog in de wolken

De felle lichten en de schittering van de zon

Het gevoel hebben dat hij het een heel jaar niet heeft gezien

Keek naar rechts en zag een rolstoel

Maar hij had geen idee wat het daar deed

Traag en gedrogeerd van god weet wat

Met machines en stomazakjes tot aan zijn buik

Lichaam zo stijf dat hij wil staan

Maar hij realiseerde zich dat hij zijn benen niet kon voelen

Keek naar rechts en zag dat zijn moeder daar was

Ze glimlachte terug, liet een traan

Reikte uit en hield toen zijn hand vast

Hij zag haar het doen, maar hij voelde er niets van

Lichamelijk gevoelloos, maar hij voelde angst

Grappig hoe die ene stoere vent nu bang was

De dokter maakte hem rustig attent

Dat hij een heel jaar in coma heeft gelegen

Auto-ongeluk op nieuwjaar

Hij was aangewezen als chauffeur voor een paar vrienden

Wie had er een ritje nodig na een paar biertjes

Maar hij had al een paar jaar niet gedronken

Ze waren bijna thuis toen hij werd geknipt

Draaide uit de hand en de auto sloeg over de kop

Nu kon hij alleen maar snikken met zijn moeder

Zei dat het andere kind met hem goed thuiskwam

Ongeveer drie jaar geleden sinds die gebeurtenis

Sindsdien pak ik de stukjes op

Niemand verwacht dat hij weer zal lopen

Fiets, sta of speel weer met een bal

Maar hij staat op het punt om ze te laten zien wat er aan de hand is

Ging in negen maanden van een rolstoel naar een rollator

Naar een rollator om te leren opstaan

En vandaag zet hij zijn eerste stapjes
