Gazing at the sun

From the ocean floor

Unable to breathe

Can’t be sure if I need to

Your wings, now rotten scabs

That you need to keep damp

I made a choice, now the tethers burn my skin

Why does my blood run cold?

Bereft of air we’re sinking further

Habituating, you say you feel it

Getting warmer…

But I can’t feel a thing

Here on the ocean floor

I can see its light (through the water)

I cannot feel the warmth (it radiates)

Sympathy is spent

I learnt to hear the cold (through your eyes)

A silence so intense

Stifles our words of denial and contempt

As we dive down through the sun

A thousand miles from shore

I cannot fucking breathe

Can’t be sure if I need to

My neck jerks without warning we surface

No time to decompress

But you stumble back towards the edge

You leap, I follow

Together we dive

down…

Kan niet ademen

Ik weet niet zeker of het nodig is

Dat je vochtig moet houden

Ik heb een keuze gemaakt, nu branden de banden op mijn huid

Waarom wordt mijn bloed koud?

Zonder lucht zinken we verder

Gewenning, je zegt dat je het voelt

Maar ik kan niets voelen

Hier op de oceaanbodem

Ik kan zijn licht zien (door het water)

Ik kan de warmte niet voelen (het straalt uit)

Sympathie is besteed

Ik leerde de kou te horen (door jouw ogen)

Een stilte zo intens

Verstikt onze woorden van ontkenning en minachting

Terwijl we door de zon naar beneden duiken

Duizend mijl uit de kust

Ik kan verdomme niet ademen

Ik weet niet zeker of het nodig is

Nodig hebben…

Mijn nek schokt zonder waarschuwing dat we boven komen

Geen tijd om uit te pakken

Geen tijd om uit te pakken

Samen duiken we

En ik denk dat ik dagenlang geschorst kan zweven

Compassie is neergeslagen

Mijn hopeloze anker

Daedalus, voor alles wat hij probeerde,

Waarschuwingen voor altijd

Aan dovemansoren gericht

Icarus je bent bedrogen

Je vleugels veranderen in wortels

Grijp nu naar het zand en krijg vorm

Op de plek die je vasthoudt

Gewoon een woord van troost

Je zult nooit verdrinken

Icarus je bent alleen en bent dat altijd geweest

Dus waarom ben ik hier?
